With the right treatment, relief from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is possible. It is advised that sufferers of PTSD seek clinical attention as soon as possible in order to avoid long-term effects which adversely affect their quality of life and relationships.
One psychotherapy treatment which has gained considerable recognition as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder is eye movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR therapy is one of the most extensively researched treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder and has been endorsed by many of the world’s leading organisations for studies in psychotherapy, including The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
EMDR therapy is a fast-acting form of psychotherapy for trauma. The therapist uses eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while the patient recalls the traumatic memory. This back-and-forth eye movement is thought to stimulate the two hemispheres of the brain and accelerate the brain’s ability to process trauma. By decoupling the sense of threat from the trauma, EMDR therapy inhibits the development of secondary problems down the track.
