How to Manage PTSD

PTSD symptoms can become increasingly difficult to manage. When emotions become intense – often too intense to deal with – they can cause a significant amount of distress. Unfortunately, due to this, sufferers of PTSD often succumb to unhealthy habits such as excessive drinking, drug use and poor eating behaviours.

It’s vital for sufferers of PTSD to learn different ways to cope with distressing thoughts, or flashbacks of memories of their traumatic experiences.

Some of the methods for managing PTSD include:

• Trauma focused therapy such as EMDR
• Addressing negative thoughts (and evaluating them in a positive way)
• Incorporating mindfulness into everyday life
• Using self monitoring techniques
• Improving self-esteem with positive statements
• Recognising triggers before they appear
